One of my absolute favourite astronomy things to do is to sit out under a beautiful star-filled sky and watch a meteor shower.  I love just looking up and studying the whole sky as I wait excitedly for the next streak of light to streak across the sky.  The anticipation builds and then, there goes another one!  I just love it!

2. Observe on the Predicted Peak of the Shower

All meteor showers can occur for days and weeks, however on, or either side of the peak, will give you the highest hourly rates of meteors, making for an exciting and impressive display. Make sure you confirm the peak for your time zone.

3. Find out the Radiant Point for the Shower

The radiant point for a meteor shower is the point in the sky that meteors will appear to radiate from. Knowing this provides you with the best direction in the sky to look towards, to increase your chances of seeing more meteors as they streak across the sky.

4. Will the Light of the Moon be a Factor?

Understanding the Moon’s phases and rise and set times during a meteor shower is vital for working out the optimal time for viewing. The light of the Moon will reduce visibility dramatically so plan your observing before the Moon rises or after it sets.

5. Use a Red Light Torch

While out under a dark sky, your eyes become used to the darkness, this is your night vision! If you need light, use a piece of red cellophane to cover a torch. Red light doesn’t affect your night vision like white light does and will ensure you see more meteors.

6. Warm Clothes, Hat, Scarf and Gloves

Summer stargazing is a lovely time to be out under the stars however winter is even better.  Winter rains help to clear the air of dust and cold air holds less moisture, allowing for clear viewing conditions.  But make sure you rug up well. You want to be comfortable while sky watching!

7. Take a Fold-Up Chair or Blanket

One needs to be patient when watching for meteors, so being comfortable is a must.  Laying back on a blanket or in a comfy chair will help you look up at the sparkling stars overhead and ensure you don’t miss any shooting stars.

9. And Finally, Take a Hot Drink!

Packing a thermos of hot coffee, tea or whatever takes your fancy will top off a brilliant night under the stars.  There is nothing better than sipping on a warming beverage, as a spectacular meteor shower is at its fiery peak.
