An excited crowd of approximately 40 attended the celebration unveiling of the new Moora Speedway Clubroom Mural on Thursday, 1 February 2018. The artwork features the amazing Aboriginal constellation of the Emu in the Sky.
Two local Yuat artists, Roberta Mippy and Debbie Nannup, have created the beautiful painting that represents the constellation of the Emu in the Sky. The Art Coordinator, Dean O’Callaghan, started the project in November 2017 with Ms Mippy and Ms Nannup putting the final touches to the work this month.
The project is supported by the Wheatbelt Development Commission (represented by Wendy Newman, CEO and Rebecca Kelly, Senior Regional Office Moora), Tronox (accepted on their behalf by Kaye McGlew), Moora Speedway (Dale Cockman, President) and the Moora Sports and Recreation Association (Zoe Joyce).
It has not only produced a stunning piece of art work but has brought the community together. It is helping to create a strong sense of collaboration and pride in the town and wider community around Moora.
The celebrations were very moving. Certificates were handed out to all involved in the project and Ms Mippy related some of the stories behind features contained within the mural. She pointed out the importance of the water well which she remembers as a child. She says she still knows where it is to this very day! Ms Mippy also mentioned the painted feet in the mural. These each have unique patterns that represent different families.
The event was held at the Moora Youth Centre, 6510 Youth, and the Moora Speedway Committee put on a sausage sizzle and refreshments for the crowd.
